Occupy the Spaces Between Self-Doubt and Betrayal, 2022. Oil on board. 120 x 100 x 5cm.
Under The Surface, 2022. Oil on board. 40.6 x 30.5 x 3.8cm.
An examination of our inner thoughts, this artwork reflects on mental health and our personal wellbeing. The text ‘Under the Surface’ is used to indicate to the viewer that not all is as it appears on the surface; our facial expressions, demeanour and actions are regularly used to hide our true thoughts and feelings as a way of maintaining civility and conforming to what is deemed socially acceptable. The three distinct layers of the portrait, the text and finally the foremost layer of textured polka dots that hover above the main elements of the artwork, invite the viewer to consider what is ‘Under the Surface’. The mirrored text symbolises how our thoughts can be flipped and twisted; a distorted view of reality as we can often be overly critical of our own thoughts and actions.
